GOP wants mortgage relief, tax cuts in stimulus

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent –

AP – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky,. discusses the Republican viewpoint on the economic stimulus …
WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans pressed for mortgage relief as well as larger tax cuts Monday as debate opened on the emergency economic stimulus measure atop President Barack Obama's agenda. Democrats came under pressure to reduce spending in the bill.
"What we can't do is let very modest differences get in the way" of swift enactment of the legislation, Obama said as new layoffs rippled through the economy and the Commerce Department reported an unexpectedly large sixth straight drop in personal spending. He invited Democratic leaders to the White House to discuss changes in the $884 billion measure, in hopes of avoiding a party-line vote like the one last week in the House.

GOP wants what?! Oh please. Obama gave them some consessions his first go around with them and what did they do? They didn't give him a single vote. It's over. We need not give a single inch to the GOP at this point in time. Perhaps later, but we the people voted for change. . . BIG change. The GOP, after being defeated in a major way the past two years by losing the house, the senate and the presidency still wants to act like they're in charge of something. Now, I'm all for letting bygones be bygones, but while the GOP was in control of the congress for the 12 years before '06, they ignored and disrespected the congressional democrats in a way that I had never seen in my lifetime. Now they think they should be treated with the respect that they refused to give anyone else? Now they want the democrats to listen to them after they ignored the dems for 12 years? Well, they were given some respect and shown courtesy that they never gave during the first go around. They delivered nothing. Not a single bipartisan vote.

I mean, come on. Look in the mirror Mitch, you look like the biggest has-been on capital hill. You're a droopy jawed hog jowled old douchbag. We just elected a Gen X liberal intellectual to be president. Go away Mitch. It's over for you. We just don't care what you and your right wing corpo-fascist race baiting pricks have to say anymore. I hope the democratic leadership begins realizing this and quits trying to make friends with these pricks who don't want to be friends.

They need to get rid of the 340 billion in pork thats still in the bill. Stimulus yes, handouts later in social bill.

There is too much tax cuts in the bill already *about 33%) and too little for infrastructure (9%), which stimulates jobs quicker than anything else and puts money in the hand of regular folks the quickest. Dems don't need to give in any further to Republicans by giving more tax cuts. What they really don't like is that s significant amount of the tax cuts goes to small businesses and low-income people, and not their rich corporate friends.

The real deal is that Republicans want too things: Tax cuts to the rich, which has already failed, and for the Obama stimulus to fail, so Republicans can recover some of the losses it incurred in 2004 and 2008.

Sagacious, you watch: The days of compromising with people like Sen. McConnell will end soon. They don't know how to cooperate; and Obama is dreaming if he thinks he can work with him.

daddyBstrong,
Take a close look at the bill and what they aren't telling us. I agree the rich don't need any money and the Republicans are playing here. But the bill still has 340 billion in it that "may" put 100 people to work. What does 400,000 TV adaptors, condoms, grass, bailout for Georgia government, etc., etc., etc. have to do with putting people to work. Lets build new schools, youth centers, bridges, highways, community hospitals, library/computer centers, new sewers, new water lines, senior centers, "affordable" housing for the poor, border security [Canada & Mexico, secure port facilities, railroad upgrades and new community VA hospitals. If the Democrats want a social bill they have the votes, keep it seperate and lets get the country going first.

I don't particularly like these huge spending bills. Where is all this money coming from? IT's coming from our children's future. 20 yrs ago, our biggest concern was the insane runaway debt of the Reagan/Bush legacy. Now we seem resolved to accept whatever amount of debt our politicians want to heap on our children.
The bottom line is however, these uncooperative, disrespectful republicans need to be shown the door.

Actually I think infrastructure is almost 20% of the package, but still....not nearly enough. How can tax cuts be more than that?

Tax cuts have proven time and time again to be a big fat failure. When are we going to finally put the Milton Friedman/Ayn Rand ideology to rest?!?

Also, Mitch McConnell looks like the second faze of face melting for that nazi guy in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Rainy: I agree. The dems do have priorities in the bill that have little or nothing to do with getting the economy going, like 20 million to the National Endowment for the Arts.

I heard by a pundit on tv say that Obam's people put extras in so they will have some stuff get rid of in negotiations with Republicans in the senate. But even if that's true, it's still not enough for infrastructure, for those things like Rainy mentioned that can get people jobs and get the economy moving again.

Crystal says infrastructure is 20%. Glad to hear that, but I think it should be more like 30-40.

Frankly, I think Obama is listening too much to his former teacher economist Larry Summers who favors tax cuts and working through banks over infrastructure.
