Stereotypes and sports teams

OK, I'll admit, I'm not exactly a "sports fan." In fact, I find most sports to be worthless endeavors. I like to ski, hunt, fish, play some baseball. I even go to MLB games now and then, but a sports fan I am NOT.

That aside, it's kind of disgusting the things major league sports teams get away with. Take for example the Cleveland Indians. Here is the symbol of their team:

If that's ok by you, how about this, The Afros:

Do you like the symbol of the Washington "Redskins" better?

"Redskin" is considered a very derogatory term by Native American people. Would you support a team called the "Negros" or the "Niggers" with a characature of a black man in profile as the team symbol?

Yea, it's just as bad as that.
The United States government committed genocide against the Native population of this land and now we adopt ridiculous characterizations and terms of them to use on our sports teams.
Hell, that's a good enough reason for me to not be a sports fan. Until major league sports decide to ban all such team names and references I support a total boycott of the industry. Fuck any industry that stereotypes and demeans any group of people just because of there racial heritage.

Thanks for the heads up on this Chris.

I would support any and all racist stereotypes. They are hilarious!

You support whatever CRag tells you to support and THAT'S hilarious.

No one says anything about Notre Dame's Fightin' Irish guy.

I think we need to get over ourselves. These things don't cause racism. Ignorant Num Nuts cause racism. It's like saying the jokes that Sarah Silverman & Dave Chappell do increase racism. It doesn't.

I'm confused by your comment to AngryMan. I'm not his wifey.

CRag, "get over ourselves?"
Wow. Tha'ts a shocking thing to hear an intelligent progressive person say.
400 yrs of degradation, gross oppression, genocide, unspeakable horrors and the continuous ever present prejudice and you want everyone to just "get over ourselves?"
Yes, wouldn't it be nice if everyone would just "get over themselves" and then we could "all just get along" and live happily ever after.
Before everyone can just "get over ourselves," the symbols of racism need to removed. No, they don't "cause racism," they ARE racism.
You deny everything today including your total control over SlightlyAnnoyedBoy.

Why do you assume I'm progressive?

"We" are super sensitive.
There's a reason why I use the word cunt, b/c people are too sensitive about the word.
Will I have feminists coming after me? Will it be banned? Will jokes be banned? Will blonde jokes be banned?

The other thing is that it is free speech. Banning symbols leads to banning books. This reasoning may be faulty, but that’s how I see it.

Just because it hurts people's feelings shouldn't mean it should be banned.

For example the College of William & Mary had to get rid of their feathers b/c they're the Tribe.
Who is that hurting? There's no drunken Indian mascot.

Racism will always be a part of our society. If we have to tip-toe on egg shells all the time just b/c something is offensive, I don't want to leave in a place like that.

CRag, I will fight for your right to use the word "cunt" and for anyone's right to make whatever statements or use whatever symbols they want to use.
I will also support the boycotting of any institution, organization, corporation or individual that uses symbols or makes statements that promote or contribute to the existence of racism and other prejudices that hurt people, especially children.

It's just like that Swastiker (Spelling?) website. It's cool. Just because some people don't like the symbol anymore doesn't mean it's all bad.
It's just Hitler's fault that's all.

P.S - C.rag "Leave = live" May just, although it started life as a spelling correction, be the most philosphofical thing I've heard in a long time.
